Yupps, that's my watch, or in layman terms, group. DA GAMA. Okay, according to
Wikipedia, Vasco da Gama is one of the really great Portuguese explorers. Like, really really great. :D Similarly, my watch is really really great too^^ Oh, group members! From left to right. Back row: 310 Cheryl Lee, Teng Si, Yilei (ME!), -space/gap-, Kathleen, Vanessa, Hong Jing, Meiyi, Fangning, Claudene. Front row: Peiyu, Yifan, Ruoyi, Belle, Koh Huey, Clara (Tay), Ngoc. Front front loner row: Sham.
Anyways, OBS was really fun! That's the positive side of things. But well, if you want to look on the other side, I'd consider it really tiring and the place really dirty. And the thing you'd hate most there? The bugs. I just counted, I've got around 25 mosquito/sand fly bites and 5 blue blacks that came from I-don't-know-where altogether. And the bites, the sand fly ones I think, are so freaking itchy, I keep scratching and scratching and scratching and scratching. Now, let me bring through the course! :D
Now, first day was the normal introduction day. We got to meet our instructor, Sham, in short for Shameel. And we got to surrender our phones and stuff, then we went around the place, like, got introduced to our base camp, camp 2, and each of us got a job. I'm the day one I/C together with Koh Huey! (Heh, we're slacky people who chose to do on the shortest day.) We learnt how to do outdoor cooking and well, wheeeeeeeee, I finally am able to open cans! *happy dance* Then it was bathing time. D: You can imagine the small cramped dirty bathroom where everyone's queuing up and thanks to the rain, there were huge flying insects hovering around the light. Terrible terrible terrible. Then, we packed our bags into the huge backpack they lent us. Ew, it is really dirty. Oh, then we learnt how to pitch our tents within 5 minutes. Seriously? It was easy. :D Then? We slept^^ I shared the tent with Koh Huey, Clara (Tay) and Claudene!
Second day! We learnt how to kayak! We've got to learn how to capsize and recover. So, we got ourselves all wet and stinky. Yeah, stinky. (In contrast to our ideal image of the clean sparkling blue sea, omg, it's so dirty salty oily and filled with quite a bit of litter. Especially when the tide is getting higher, the dirt gets more obvious at the coast.) So then, we kayaked our way to camp 1! Kayaking is so so so fun! Okay, so again, we queued for the toilets at camp 1 that are equally dirty... Then, we went to pitch our tents in this forest near camp 1. Omg, there's a lot of mosquitoes there. And we learnt how to belay the 4-step belaying method, and it was really weird. The left hand feels really awkward. Yeah, but still, we had to learn. Then, we had dinner! Not really good, but still, at least no outdoor cooking. *sighs!* Hmm, so after bathing, we packed our stuff and went for this briefing about our really long kayaking trip. Then we went to play this team bonding game: memory game played in a group. Then we heard the lame mwachi (mochi) story, part one, that got us all fooled and felt really lame. We went up the hill to our tents in the dark with our flashlights. And wonderful, I realised we pitched our tents at the deepest part of the forest when some other group got their tents pitched at the outside, on this really green, nice and clean grass patch. Unfair D< D< D<
Day threeeeeeeeeee! We went to our bags and found that the food bag was infested with ants. So we killed the ants with 310 Cheryl's insect repellent. Only hers worked... We played the team bonding game again and we did amazingly well this time round. Then, we proceeded to do the high elements~ THE ZIPLINE WAS STUPID TTM. I gathered all my courage and energy to climb up to the highest element and halfway through, the fantastic zipline was so irritating, it wouldn't budge. Wonderful, so I made a graceful U-turn and climbed down again. WTH. Ohkay, at least the sea view was good ): Then then then, we went to trek with the huge, really heavy bag. It took about an hour, and the distance was about 3km. Ohmygosh, my shoulders were so painful. They backpacks were really heavy. D: Okay, then, we camped at this campsite. Loads of bugs, but luckily there aren't as many mosquitoes or sandflies (I think). We ate maggie mee, that had an extra seasoning of the rain water. Who cares, we just gobbled the thing down. Then sleep. (P.S. we got wiser and brought our food into the safety of the tent with us.)
Day four, cotinued from previous day. Then wake up for duty to keep watch from 1.30am to 2am. Then sleep. Then wake up at 5am. Whoa, so tiring D: Then pack pack pack pack pack. Pee in the bushes. (Ohmygosh, disgusting plus embarrassing!) Then breakfast. Then KAYAKING! We went kayaking round Pulau Ubin to get back to camp 2! It was around a 5 hours trip. So we started at around 7 plus 8, and if you do your math, you should be able to guess correctly that we ended at 12 plus plus 1. In fact, we ended at 12:51pm, when our target was to reach by 3! Yay. So, we washed the really dirty kayaks and went for... *drumrolls please* JETTY JUMP! Yay, it was so fun jumping from the height. Went twice went twice went twice! Okay, it was so so so fun. I don't know why, but all I know is that it is super fun. Epic thing: how I know I am in water already- when I heard the splash. We were supposed to breathe out before we go in so that water wouldn't get into the nose, but I didn't even know when I was going in 'cause my eyes were shut, and duh, water went in. Gah, everything's so salty in the sea. Then we packed and bathed and changed into the,
omg, i'm so lovin' it, shorts! My hair felt really clean and it finally smelt of the fragrant shampoo that I always use at home sweet home. Then, we pitched our tent on this grass patch, which has quite a lot of mosquitoes. Argh. Then we had outdoor cooking. But this was really fun because there were fresh vegetables, better can foods, eggs and a nicer stove. Yeah, the food turned out good and even though we ate a lot, we still had extras. It was so fun! Oh then we had sharing, like what we learnt and this really emotional activity, to thank 2 persons and apologise to 1. (It got damn emotional and I got people thanking me for really small acts, of kindness, I suppose, and people saying sorry for things that I would like to thank them for. Gah, its kind of awkward the way I say it now, but well, it was emotional. Oh, and thanks to the long kayaking trip, my head was spinning for a whole minute.) And then, we got tricked into another lame story, which apparently is the mwachi (mochi) story, part 2. Oh, damn it. Then we went to sleep.
Try finding mwachi (mochi) on this Pulau Ubin coast. D< Day five. Final day, awww D: But yeah, we packed the place, tried teaching Sham to play umjiji and shared our learnings with our teacher and proceeded on to the closing ceremony, which was mostly full of crap. Then we went on to listen to Sham's waste-of-time story of ah seng and can-be-emmotional story of ah seng's younger brother, ah beng, and crafted our very lame story of ah gao (dialect for ah dog), their father. The we camwhored! Yay. Then we went back, with mixed feelings. we, or maybe, I miss the place and the activities and the very nice and lame instructors, but at the same time, I yearn for home. So yeah, eventually, we still went home, with the fondest memories of OBS. And no, contrary to popular belief, the course isn't that physically demanding, unless you are so unlucky and is in the group that had to kayak to the day three campsite and trek approximately seven hours back to base camp with the very heavy bags.
