I'm supposed to be blogging about yesterday but I'm going to start with today (: I watched the film adaptation and read the book Divergent today and it's pretty incredible. Nonetheless, I kind of regret watching the movie first since movie scenes tend to get stuck in my headwhich makes it much more dificult for me to imagine up a whole new scene while reading, which is, really, kind of sad. But anyway, here are some quotes I picked up while reading and wow, they're good. I'm not even talking about them in context; these sentences sound pretty amazing just being read on its own, just like that.

Ohkay, going back to yesterday, it was a true blue lazy Friday. Well, it did out so, seeing that we had a complex test and another complex test. (Yes Mrs Ng and her aptly named tests - only reudi soplved the first question whuich was supposed to be the most doable) then we had some other classes which weren't that bad and then it was a two hour lunch break. We were spared from the usual assembly since we were going for assembly, which zining and I spent watching 大世界 and it was hilarious. It could be because we randomly picked the disc up from the library shelf without reading the synopsis or watching any sort of trailer before hand and it ended up to be a comedy, and more unexpectedly, in dialects without subtitles (in a rush, we skipped the menu page and dived straight into the movie lol). Thank goodness most of it was in hokkien and cantonese (which I could understand!). There was a part where the actors were speaking with hainanese but it was ok since I watched it with subtitles at home yesterday night :D In addition, I'm awefully glad that it was Zining I watched the show with because she is one of the few among the clique of girls to still be able to understand dialects fluently. I can't imagine watching the movie without subtitles with the rest, they would practically be clueless LOL.

Anyway, moving on, we took a bus ride all the way to Changi Airbase (East) to visit the 145 Squadron, otherwise known as the "Hornets". So, they've been named the best fighter squadron 2104, they fly the twin seated F-16D jet and they're pretty damn cool. We started out with this presentation by the Chief Commanding Officer (?? I don't remember his exact title, but well, basically the top dog) where he made a basic introduction about RSAF and the squadron in general, talking about things like the manpower organisation, the jets they fly and their difference from previous models (fuel capacity, display coupling, radar... ) and things they normally do, bilateral/multilateral exercises which they are involved in. Then, the interesting part starts as we move to the hangar. (It's more of a shelter than an enclosed hangar actually but ok anyway) We got to look at the jet and interact with the pilots. Although we couldn't enter the cockpit, we managed to lean on the side and take a close up look while the pilot explained the generally different parts of the jet to us, and guess what, the "pull to eject" thing - where the whole seat ejects and flies out of the jet with a parachute - that happens in movies and dramas actually does exist, and my ignorance doesn't stop there. Fighter jets, unlike commercial aircraft, do not actually have the steering wheel! All this is pretty crazy if you start to think about the number of buttons that are in the cockpit, coupled with the throttle and the pedals and the centre stick where the release buttons for the weaponries are also at, and these have to be taken into the context where the jet is flying at some super high speed and proably in a combat situation. The kind of decision making skills and vigilance must simply be mindblowing. Anyway, we talked to the pilots about things like the kind of tests they had to go through, the prerequisites for the job, how they got their nicknames (basically their bosses gave them their nicknames based on their first impressions or basically something they did when they first entered), the different training grounds given Singapore's limited airspace, things like how they intercept other planes, whether the jets could land on carriers and if it was more challenging to take off or land - landing actually happens to be more difficult, so next time you take a plane, don't be too happy until it lands safely. Then we got to see the pilots do a scramble start (basically they perform like 90% of the checks beforehand, shut the plane down, wait till the time comes and perform the last few checks - which takes no more than 5 minutes - and get clearance and fly wheeee). It wasn't that loud when they started up the plane, but the real noise comes when they took off. This demonstration basically destroyed whatever awe for the speed for commercial planes because when these jets flew in the sky along with the commercial flights, the latter was significantly significantly significantly slower - not to mention that this is not anywhere near the maximum speed of the jet. The trip ended with a small (like literally small) tour of theit pilots area (?) whereby they basically hangout (they buy and contribute gadgets like playstation, jukebox, arcade machines by themselves) and with two photo montages on some exercise they participated in as well as on the Best Unit Competition. Okay, I'm in awe. (I'm probably that little bit biased towards how amazing they are but hey its no joke) Something that struck Beatrix and I too is also how the pilots were. (Unrelated but one of them reminds me of QiYuan so badly from first impresion, not only in terms of appearances but also in terms of they way they act)Personally, it was not that difficult to pick up a sense of detachment and distance, not in the sense of cruelty, but more in the sense of continuous logical thinking and processing coupled with hypervigilance, but I guess that's what make them so special and up for the job. 

Ok, I'm once again awestruck and tired at the same time. Time to sleep and perhaps take a moment to be grateful for all those protecting us while we sleep soundly in our cozy beds.
